Frequently Asked Questions
Choosing a therapist is an important decision, and it’s natural to have questions about how therapy works, what to expect, and how to get started.
Below, you’ll find answers to some of the most common questions about working with a psychotherapist in New York City, including our approach, areas of expertise, and what makes our practice distinct.
We're here to answer your questions

People come to therapy for many reasons, but at their core, it’s because they want something in their life to change. Sometimes that means relief from anxiety, low self-esteem, or relationship difficulties; other times, it reflects a desire to understand longstanding patterns in thinking, behavior, or emotional experience. Many of our clients are successful, but feel stuck in ways they haven’t been able to resolve on their own. If something has been persistently difficult, confusing, or painful, working with a psychotherapist can provide the structure and expertise needed to move forward more effectively.
There are two important differences you will notice right away when working with a therapist at Lexington Park Psychotherapy. First, our clinicians provide a therapy that is highly tailored to your specific goals. Our team is trained across multiple evidence-based and depth-oriented approaches - including CBT, IFS, and psychodynamic psychotherapy. The result is an approach to therapy that balances addressing the immediate distress of today with an understanding of how your developmental history informs and often maintains that distress.
Second, our therapists offer more than support alone. Many of our therapists have advanced post-graduate training and contribute to clinical research, bringing a level of care and expertise that goes beyond general conversation.. Clients often find that therapy here leads not only to symptom relief, but to clearer thinking, more stable relationships, and lasting psychological change.
Lexington Park is an out-of-network practice, however, if your plan has out-of-network benefits, your insurance company will reimburse you for therapy. We provide a SuperBill containing everything you need to submit to your insurance carrier.

Typically, we recommend weekly sessions - especially to start. This will allow you and your therapist to get to know each other and get to work quickly. Of course, we want to support you through your life changes, and so as your needs change, you can speak with your therapist about changing that frequency as well.
Yes! However, for the first few sessions we strongly recommend in-person sessions, especially for teens and couples.

Family Therapy

Group Therapy
Group therapy sessions are either 60 minutes or 90 minutes. This will be discussed in the initial session.
Because no single treatment model is appropriate for all people or effective in treating all issues, at Lexington Park our therapists are trained in a range of evidence-based and depth-oriented approaches, including cognitive behavioral therapy (/about-3-1)(CBT), psychodynamic psychotherapy,(/general-1-2) and int(https://www.lexingtonparkpsychotherapy.com/about-3)ernal family systems (/about-3)(IFS).
The reality is that the mind is complex and most problems emerge from an interaction of patterns in thinking, emoting, and behaving; interact with relationships to other people, work, and the person they want to be; and are influenced by their unique personal history. Because of this, effective therapy requires an approach that integrates different modalities in order to flexibly move between these different areas.
Our integrative approach to psychotherapy allows us to work with greater precision, addressing not only the immediate symptoms you’re experiencing, but also the underlying structures that give rise to them. The goal is not simply to apply techniques, but to develop a deeper understanding of your experience and use that understanding to guide lasting change.
Choosing the right therapist involves both personal fit and clinical expertise. While feeling comfortable is important, it’s equally important to work with someone who is experienced with the issues you’re facing. We guide you through this process and match you with a therapist whose approach, background, and experience align closely with your goals, making it easier to begin therapy with confidence.
We provide both individual therapy to those struggling to navigate personal challenges and couples therapy (/couplestherapy)to those in relationships who want to improve communication, feel more connected, or work through conflicts more productively.
