Cognitive Behavioral Therapy in Manhattan, NY

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is probably the most research-backed psychotherapy available. It is endorsed by American Psychological Association and The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence and has been called the "gold standard" for psychotherapeutic models.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

Cognitive behavioral therapy, or CBT, involves becoming aware of the way your thoughts, emotions, and behaviors interact to produce negative self-talk, painful feelings, and destructive behavioral patterns. By learning to identify automatic thoughts and then adjust them, you can take control of your mental health.

This involves learning skills that often feel unnatural and completing homework between sessions. You have spent years, maybe decades, engaging in the patterns that aren't serving you and so learning new ways think, feel, and behave can feel strange and even forced. But by trusting the process, you will make progress.

Is CBT in Manhattan right for me?

CBT is an extremely versatile mode of psychotherapy, with a strong evidence-base. It has been shown to be an effective treatment for anxiety, depression, chronic pain, pregnancy complications, and several other conditions (see: here). A CBT therapist may be right for you if:

  • You would like a more active psychotherapist

  • You are stuck repeating patterns that are causing you distress

  • You are struggling with motivation or want to become a better version of yourself

  • You would like to be more productive

  • You want to change a specific behavior

CBT at Lexington Park Psychotherapy

Within the framework of CBT, there are subtle variations that different clinicians employ. For example, Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT) emphasizes interrupting and challenging irrational thoughts that lead to painful emotions whereas exposure therapy emphasizes becoming aware of the way emotions influence behavior and learning to unlink certain automatic responses through gradual desensitization. At Lexington Park Psychotherapy, we apply an integrative framework to psychotherapy. That means that the elements of CBT that will benefit you are brought to bear without forcing you into a rigid or unnecessarily narrow theoretical system and allowing you to benefit from several other therapeutic techniques, including internal family systems (IFS), psychodynamic psychotherapy, acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), trauma-informed care, and many others.
